DIY: Felt Play Envelopes

Last week I showed you some felt envelopes I made for my two daughters.
They were so quick and easy and today I've got a tutorial so you can make some too.

Ready? Here's what you need:
Felt square (which I buy from Lincraft/Spotlight and is more a rectangle) or 9 x 6 inch piece
Felt scraps - use them to make the 'stamp'
Fabric scissors
Coloured thread
Pins
Hand sewing needle and/or sewing machine
Fabric glue
Velcro dots

{1} - Place your fabric square/rectangle in the 'landscape' position and cut right down the middle, top to bottom OR cut a piece of felt 9 inch by 6 inch.
{2} - For the 'address lines' placement, fold the short side up 3.5 inch, hold, flip over and mark (or eyeball) where the address lines will be sewn.
{3} - Open up the felt again, then use contrasting thread to hand stitch two or three zig-zag lines to create the 'address' where you marked OR use the zig-zag function on your sewing machine.

{4} - Flip to the back of the envelope, reposition to 3.5 inch and pin 1/2 inch from the edge.
{5} - Sew a straight stitch 1/4 inch from each edge.
{6} - Use felt scraps to create a 'stamp' - either stitching or fabric glue will be fine. Then attach the stamp with fabric glue to the front, top right of the envelope but not on the 'flap'.

{7} - Attach the velcro dots on the back of the envelope and the inside of the flap, making sure they align! (Note: these velcro dots have adhesive but they recommend to still sew them down. The adhesive stuck all over my machine needle and had to be thrown out when I was done.)
{8} - Trim the 'flap' to create curved edges.
{9} - Stitch the velcro dots in place if you choose with two straight stitches.

You're done! Create a few more in different colours and get those envelopes in the {play} mailbox!

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Let me know if you make some, I'd love to see.

  2. They are so cute! My son is a little small to understand the whole letter thing yet, but maybe one day I'll make.

    1. They're good for little hands and thankfully take up mimimal space. My 1 yr old just likes to carry them around. :)

  3. Cute! I like that they are "actual" envelopes that they could put something in. I made some a while ago but they were just a decorated piece of felt. Kids love to open and close things!

    1. Yes I like how the girls can put stuff / letters inside. My MIL saw these and wanted one to hold all her little cards in. :)

  4. ooooh, these are adorable. I bet my daughter would love to make some. These would be good for a child to handsew, too because it's felt and won't fray. GREAT idea.

    1. Oh yeah your daughter could totally make one of these by hand. Good fine motor skills practice. Be fun to make and give to friends. :)
